Mabilog eyes New Year with less injuries

ILOILO CITY- Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog here is eyeing a prosperous 2013 for city residents with fewer injuries during the New Year celebration and at the same time, invites everyone to the New Year countdown along the Iloilo River behind the Iloilo Customs House on the evening of December 31. .
The city chief executive said the traditional New Year’s Eve can be celebrated without the use of firecrackers and other pyrotechnics as these materials are harmful to users especially the children.
Mabilog said that Iloilo City has every reason to be thankful for being spared by Typhoon Quinta and its flashflood aftermath that affected 20 municipalities in the province of Iloilo.
Ilonggos are prone to celebrate the New Year with loud noise including firecrackers and pyrotechnics. The city mayor said that in other countries like Europe and the United States, people usually congregate in one place to celebrate the New Year and it is the government that provides the fireworks display for the people to enjoy.
Iloilo City is hosting the New Year Countdown and it is the third year of celebration along the Iloilo River where people come and celebrate the coming in of 2013 with a fireworks display and musical pyrotechnics show starting at 10 PM.
The street from Quirino Lopez Bridge up to the Muelle Loney will be closed to vehicular traffic so that the people will have advantage view of the fireworks along the river.
Mabilog said the celebration will actually start on Sunday, December 30 with a foodfest until Monday, December 31 augmented b a band concert at the area behind the Iloilo Customs House.
This way, there will be lesser or minimal accidents and injuries due to the fireworks, the city mayor added.
